Discovering Discovery Green

04/01/11 & 04/02/11
Sublime with Rome & Kings of Leon
Discovery Green - Houston, TX

Me & the boyfriend on the way to Discovery Green.  I realize he's cutoff but come on, we're adorable.
It all started as I was checking my twitter feed one fabulous afternoon when I saw that Kings of Leon was “putting on a free show” in Houston.  I checked it out and it was true!  And not only was KOL going to be there, but Sublime with Rome too!  I knew Jonathan would be super stoked for Sublime and that I could probably talk him into going to KOL with me.

Friday evening we ventured down to Houston.  I have never been to the Discovery Green park before so I didn’t really know what to expect.  But man it was beautiful, so big and so much to do!  Sublime with Rome took the stage and it was such an experience!  I know, I know, he’s no Bradley but I think Rome killed it.  He was a little more screamo-ish (for example: Garden Grove, see video!) but I think it’s cool he put his own twist on it.  If he were to try and copy Bradley's every sound and move, I'm sure he would probably catch even more heat.  They played the fan faves (What I Got, Santeria, Wrong Way, Smoke Two Joints) and Garden Grove!  Such a phenomenal jammin' song that's actually really gritty if you look into the lyrics.  Another favorite was Badfish.  I had so much fun seeing Jonathan have so much fun; it was great to see him really enjoy a concert.

The next day was Kings of Leon.  Now I'm not a diehard KOL fan, but I figured they were a good band and I might as well go see them play live while I can.  (Plus it was free!)  Discovery Green was packed and it was pretty warm outside.  But KOL did not disappoint; they played their hits (Sex on Fire, Use Somebody, Pyro).  The song I was most excited to hear though was Notion (again, see video).  I would have loved to have heard Closer, but what can you do?  (An acceptable answer to that would be to SEE ANOTHER SHOW!)  Caleb Followill has such a distinctive voice and they put on a good show.  It was a great boozy-jammin-free weekend.
